What is cranberry extract good for?
Cranberry has been used for reducing the risk of "bladder infections" (urinary tract infections). It has also been used for decreasing the smell of urine in people who are unable to control urination (incontinent).
Does cranberry extract help UTI?
Pure cranberry juice, cranberry extract, or cranberry supplements may help prevent repeated UTIs in women, but the benefit is small. It helps about as much as taking antibiotics to prevent another UTI. Using cranberry products to prevent UTIs may be expensive, and some women complain of the taste.
How much cranberry extract should I take for a UTI?
There is no standard dose of cranberry. Some studies have used between 10-16 ounces of cranberry juice cocktail daily to prevent UTIs. Other studies have used between 800-1,600 milligrams daily of cranberry supplement capsules.
How long does cranberry pills take to work?
Although not all women taking the cranberry supplement avoided urinary tract infections (15 out of 80 compared with 30 out of 80), the researchers found a later onset in most cases for those who were using it—18 days as opposed to 8.5 days after surgery.
