This is an early "Author's Edition" of the book and stated to be a 3rd edition..
Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant: April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) was an American military officer and politician who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877.
Published by Hodder And Stoughton in 1886, 27, Paternoster Row, London and printed in Great Britain by Butler & Tanner, The Selwood Printing Works, Frome, and London.
This is bound in the publisher's original pictorial cloth, with stunning illustrations and stylised lettering on the front board and spine. The cover is intact and robust, but there is some wear, which is consistent with a book which is nearly 140 years old. This includes bumping to the corners, small marks, light patches of rubbing to the cloth, mostly at the edges, and a very gentle lean to the spine. Please see the photographs provided for further reference.
Inside, the pages are bright for their age. There is darker tanning on the half-title page and the last page of the publisher's catalogue, at the rear of the book. The pages are in an overall neat and clean state for their age, and predominantly uncreased. However, there are the very occasional small marks, light or small creases. Most of the pages are without rips and their are only a few pages which have small rips at their edges and a very small hole near the inner edge of page 239 and overleaf. None of the afore mentioned affect the text. On the front pastedown there is an ornately decorated prize award plate pasted. This has been filled in in ink, with the date July, 1888. It is from the Merchant Company Schools, Edinburgh. There is no further pen or pencil inside this book. The frontispiece is partially loose, but still attached within the book and the remaining pages are secure. Between a handful of pages there are light cracks in the gutter. There are no missing pages, and so all 411 pages are present, plus 12 pages containing the publisher's book catalogue at the rear. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book.
This measures approximately 19.3 cm by 13 cm by 4.7 cm. It weighs approximately 630 grams.
