Sacred Lotus is a perennial aquatic plant native to Asia, where it grows from the Volga delta to Japan in the north and from Australia. Large leaves and flowers rise above the water's surface from a thick silt-laying rhizome. Young leaves float in the water, but older leaves rise up to 1.5 m above its surface. They are disc-shaped and recessed in the center. they are 30–90 cm wide and covered with wax, the specific structure of which determines the existence of the phenomenon known as the lotus effect.
