Heavy D (b.Dwight Myers May 24, 1967-Nov 8, 2011) was a Jamaican-born American rapper, singer, producer & actor. He was the former leader of Heavy D & the Boyz, a group which included dancers/background vocalists Glen Parrish, Troy Dixon & Edward Ferrell. Their debut album Living Large ('87) was a success, & Big Tyme ('89) had 4 hits. At age 22, Dixon died in a fall in '90. His death led to a tribute on the platinum album, Peaceful Journey. Song, They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.) is regarded as a hip-hop classic. In '89 Heavy D performed a guest rap on Janet Jackson's hit single Alright. It was the highest peaking song he performed in, on the USA Billboard Hot 100 Chart. In '92 he appeared on Michael Jackson's single Jam, & sang the theme songs for TV shows In Living Color & MADtv. He then began focusing on acting, appearing in TV shows before returning to the music charts with Nuttin' But Love (’94). After appearing in the off-Broadway play Riff Raff, he returned to recording with the hit Waterbed Hev (’97) & collaborated with B.B. King on his duets album Deuces Wild, rapping in the song Keep It Coming. He was referred to in the song Juicy by the Notorious B.I.G. & appeared in his video for One More Chance. He was the 1st rapper to head a major music label when he became president of Uptown Records & later senior VP at Universal Music. As an actor, he is best known for his role in the '99 film The Cider House Rules. Along with his cast-mates, he received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for best cast in a motion picture. His final live performance was with Eddie F at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards. Heavy D passed away in 2011 of a pulmonary embolism, aged 44.
