The Stranglers are an English rock band formed as the Guildford Stranglers in '74, who originally built a following within the pub rock scene. Their aggressive, no compromise attitude soon had them identified by the media with the emerging UK punk rock scene. Their idiosyncratic approach rarely followed any single musical genre & they explored a variety of musical styles from new wave, art rock & Gothic rock through the sophisti-pop of some of their '80s output. They had mainstream success with single, Golden Brown (’82). Other hits include No More Heroes, Peaches, Always the Sun, Skin Deep, & the 2003 Top 40 hit Big Thing Coming. Their early sound was driven by Jean-Jacques Burnel's melodic bass, but also gave prominence to Dave Greenfield's keyboards. Their early music was also characterized by the growling vocals & sometimes misanthropic lyrics of both Burnel & Hugh Cornwell. Over time, their output gradually grew more refined & sophisticated. The Stranglers are 1 of the longest surviving & most continuously successful bands to have originated in the UK punk scene, scoring 23 UK Top 40 singles & 17 UK Top 40 albums in a career spanning over 4 decades!
