DESCRIPTION
In Latin.
With decorative head-and-tail pieces, vignette title pages and frontispiece engraving of the author.
Taking up ideas put forward by Hugo Grotius, Pufendorf holds that while moral law is based on revelation, and civil law on legislative enactments, natural law is ultimately established by God and its contents are discernible by human reason. In discussing these issues he considers the character of natural religion. He maintains that rational reflection can show the existence, providence, and various attributes of God. Although natural religion on its own is not sufficient for humankind, it binds society together. Atheism is destructive of society and should be punished.
From the antiquarian library of Emeritus Professor David A. Palin of the University of Manchester (bookplate to front pastedown), collected over a period of almost forty years.
