The Romantics are an American rock band, often labeled under the banner of power pop & new wave, formed in '77. They were influenced by ‘50s American rock & roll, Detroit's MC5, the Stooges, early Bob Seger, Motown R&B, ‘60s North American garage rock, as well as the British Invasion rockers. They achieved popularity in the USA, the Netherlands, Germany, Canada & Australia on the strength of their well-crafted pop songs, high energy shows & their look: from black vinyl to red leather suits in their music videos, inspired by the Motown artists The Temptations & the Four Tops. Their 2 best-charting songs were What I Like About You, which peaked at #49 in the USA & #2 in Australia & Talking in Your Sleep which peaked at #3 in the USA, #1 in Canada, & #14 in Australia. The 2 have since become mainstays on '80s, classic rock, AOR & rock radio stations. Their debut album, released in '80 in the UK, has the distinction of being the 1st record to be released of that decade.
