Artist's Biography:

Edward Matuszczak (Polish - French, 1906 - 1965)

Edward Matuszczak (1906, Tymbark, Poland -1965, Paris, France), Polish painter and sculptor, who was active in France since 1934.
He studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts in the studios of Władysław Jarocki, Wojciech Weiss and Fryderyk Pautsch. According to critics, the latter had the greatest impact on the artist's later work.
He exhibited his works many times, for a short time he was associated with the “Arts" Society of Polish Artists.
In 1934 he went to Paris, where he continued his studies in the studio of Józef Pankiewicz at the Paris branch of the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts.

After graduation, he lived permanently in France and traveled around Europe.
In 1944, he stayed in Rome for a short time, where he worked with Józef Jarema.
He lived in Israel (then Mandatory Palestine) for some time during the 1940s and created there intensively.
While living in France, he belonged to the artistic group "Realité Nouvelle".
He stopped creating in 1965 and this date is in most studies given as the date of the artist's death.
Some studies state that Edward Matuszczak died in 1984.

The work of Edward Matuszczak can be divided into two separate stages. 
The first is his oeuvre before leaving for Paris, when he created Polish landscapes and genre scenes from the life of the village. 
After graduating from the academy in Paris, his work began to evolve towards abstraction. 
Throughout his creative period, Matuszczak maintained strong ties with the Polish artistic world and took part in exhibitions organized in his homeland. 
In addition to painting, Edward Matuszczak also dealt with sculpture.

Edward Matuszczak (ur. 1906 w Tymbarku, zm. 1965 w Paryżu) – polski malarz tworzący od 1934 we Francji.

Studiował w krakowskiej Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w pracowniach Władysława Jarockiego, Wojciecha Weissa i Fryderyka Pautscha. Ten ostatni miał zdaniem krytyków największy wpływ na późniejszą twórczość artysty. Wielokrotnie wystawiał swoje prace, przez krótki czas był związany z Towarzystwem Artystów Polskich "Sztuka". W 1934 wyjechał do Paryża, gdzie kontynuował naukę w pracowni Józefa Pankiewicza. Po ukończeniu studiów nie powrócił do kraju, podróżował po Europie. W 1944 przez krótki czas przebywał w Rzymie, gdzie tworzył u boku Józefa Jaremy. Przez pewien czas mieszkał w Izraelu intensywnie tworząc, stąd na wielu aukcjach przy jego danych biograficznych jest przedstawiany jako twórca polsko-izraelski. Mieszkając we Francji należał do artystycznego ugrupowania "Realité Nouvelle". Przestał tworzyć w 1965 i ta data jest w większości opracowań podawana jako data śmierci artysty. Część opracowań podaje, że Edward Matuszczak zmarł w 1984.

Twórczość Edwarda Matuszczaka można podzielić na dwa oddzielne etapy. Pierwszym jest twórczość przed wyjazdem do Paryża, kiedy tworzył polskie pejzaże i sceny rodzajowe z życia wsi. Po ukończeniu uczelni paryskiej jego twórczość zaczęła ewoluować w kierunku abstrakcjonizmowi. Przez cały okres twórczy artysta utrzymywał silne więzi z polskim światem artystycznym i brał udział w wystawach organizowanych w ojczyźnie. Poza malarstwem Edward Matuszczak eksperymentował również z rzeźbą.
