DESCRIPTION

An uncommon work. Particularly scarce in the contemporary boards.

Illustrated throughout by John Bewick, a noted wood-engraver. There are fifty woodcuts total including a vignette title page. Collated, complete.  John Bewick was the younger brother of Thomas Bewick. He began his career working for his brother's former employer, Thomas Hodgson, before setting out on his own. He formed a relationship with the compiler and printer of this work, Rev John Trusler who lived near to Bewick's rented rooms in Clerkenwell Green. Trusler printed books from his own home and commissioned several works to feature Bewick's illustrations.

ESTC reference no: T93463.

The first and only edition of this work.
