An uncommon uncorrected proof sampler (a UK version using the US proofs) of this collection of short stories and essays from influential American novelist, short story writer, essayist and poet Ken Kesey (1935 - 2001).    His best known work is one of his early novels 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest ' published in 1962 and memorably adapted for the 1975 Academy-Award winning moveie starring Jack Nicholson.

'Demon Box ' an uncorrected proof copy sampler released by Methuen in London ahead of planned publication in 1986, 1st edition thus, standard paperback, unpaginated (74 pages).  The published book was a mix of short stories and essays.

This proof copy sampler contains 2 of the pieces that were in the published book - the short story 'Now We Know How Many Holes it Takes to Fill the Albert Hall ' and 'The Demon Box : An Essay '. These were (unusually) printed from the US proofs published by Viking.

In very good condition, no ownership markings, no spine creasing, handful of light crease lines to wrappers, light fading to outer margins of front wrapper, light crease line to lower corner of most pages.  The print copy is akin to a facsimile edition or a photocopy rather than a printed book.

Kesey explained why the collection of semi-autobiographical essays was titled Demon Box: 'When Viking was bringing it out,' he said, 'they were desperate for something to call it.  I told them, 'Don't call it anything.' It isn't a novel; it isn't an autobiography; it isn't journalism; I think of it as a box in which all this stuff goes.

To his publisher, Kesey started calling the book a 'box novel,' a new form of literature. 'If I were to think of it as a (traditional) novel, I would have joined it together and had a gradual progression of thematic movement and character change through it, but I didn't want to do that. Kesey also explained he considered the idea of publishing the essays in pamphlet form, then putting the pamphlets in a box and selling the box.
