This deciduous shrub has stiff, arching branches lined with tiny dark green leathery leaves, and tipped with sharp spines. It grows in desert washes and on rocky slopes in the Southwest. Clusters of small tubular lavender flowers are produced in the spring, followed by juicy red berries. This shrub is an important source of food and shelter for birds and animals. Plant in full sun, well-drained soils, and do not prune.
