Description:
A finely proportioned North Indian copper alloy chambu lota, likely produced in the Benares (Varanasi) region during the 19th century. The vessel possesses the classic bulbous globular body, sharply waisted neck, and flaring mouth associated with traditional ritual water vessels used throughout Northern India.
Chambu-form lotas originated as devotional and domestic vessels intended to hold sacred water, particularly water drawn from the Ganges River. Benares, among the holiest cities in Hindu tradition and one of the principal pilgrimage centers of India, became especially associated with the production and use of such ritual metalware.
The present example is decorated throughout with finely chased geometric and floral ornament arranged in horizontal registers. The decoratio displays considerable hand character and includes dense stippled punchwork, scrolling foliate devices, and repeating triangular motifs executed in low relief. The overall design retains a restrained architectural balance characteristic of traditional North Indian metalwork.
Particularly attractive is the vessel’s deep chocolate-brown surface patina, developed naturally over time and use. The warm oxidized coloration accentuates the chased decoration and gives the object strong sculptural presence.
Examples of this type occupy an important position within the broader tradition of Indian ritual and domestic metalware, where utility, devotional practice, and ornamental craftsmanship intersect.
