Lota

Northern India (possibly Benares, Uttar Pradesh)

18th-19th century

Chased copper alloy

This type of lota, or ritual water vessel, is known as chambu. The chambu originated in Benares (Varanasi), one of the seven sacred cities of India, as a container to hold holy water from the Ganges River. It is typified by its bulbous, spherical body, high foot, and short, flaring, strongly waisted neck. The chased decoration on this lota includes bands of geometric and floral designs. With a rich, chocolate patina.
