A Turned Vase

India, Punjab, Horshiapur

Mid to Late 19th century

Rosewood (shisham) with bone inlay and red lacquered interior

Dimensions: 27.5 x 17 x 7 cm

Inlay work was practiced throughout the Punjab, but the finest inlayers were concentrated in the Hoshiarpur District. These designs were Islamic in character, so figures played little or no role in the ornament. Instead, geometric motifs and geometrically positioned foliage, were preferred.

Beautiful example. NORTH INDIAN HOSHIARPUR TURNED ROSEWOOD VASE, MID TO LATE 19TH CENTURY, with a red lacquered interior, the trumpet form neck with two rings over a carved bulbous body decorated with bone flowers, over a turned red lacquered stem with one ring, on a domed foot. Minor losses. Examine photos for condition.
