The first Edinburgh edition of Montesquieu's important work on law and political theory, the preparation of which had been overseen by David Hume, had a significant influence on the Scottish Enlightenment project. Hume's own Political Discourses (1741) had previously been well received in France and shared common aims with Montesquieu.
