FAIRY TALES THAT LINGER IN OUR MEMORIES FOREVER
THERE CAN HARDLY BE A CHILD ANYWHERE who has not read or listened to at least some of the wonderful stories by he Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, who first published them in Germany more than 200 years ago in December 1812. The stories are part of growing up - Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin and many others. Read at an early age and never forgotten.
While the brothers are celebrated today for their contribution to children's literature, the original intent in publishing them was somewhat more serious. The Grimms studied old books and collected oral tales as part of their work in preserving history.
THERE WERE 86 STORIES IN THE FIRST EDITION
OF 1812 followed by 70 more in a second volume three years later. As
the years went by new editions came out with more and more stories until
the seventh edition contained 211. The content changed too
because of criticism that the stories, prepared in a scholarly way, were
not really appropriate for young minds. The fairy tales offered to
youngsters today are much softer and more gentle than these early
versions.
But they are still
wonderful aren't they? They are remembered for a
lifetime often because of the evocative
illustrations that are usually published with them in high quality books such as this one. This book is
special because it has the matchless illustrations of the celebrated artist Arthur Rackham (see examples above).
