Following on from the popularity of the 2011 Olympic 50p coins amongst coin collectors old and new, the Royal Mint announced they would release a new set of coins which would form part of The Great British Coin Hunt.
These coins would be in the format of an. A-Z alphabet collection featuring designs said to be ‘Quintessentially British.’ This time the chosen coin was a commemorative 10 pence, said to be ‘easily accessible.’
The designs include famous British landmarks, activities, emblems and inventions.
However, this proved not to be the case as frustratingly the number of these coins which entered circulation in 2018 was a meagre 220,000 for each design. This was lower than Kew Gardens and is dwarfed by previous years mintage figures for 10 pence coins entering circulation, sometimes in excess of 100 million.
In 2019 the Royal Mint announced that the coins were back by popular demand but instead of new designs as many expected, the 2018 set was simply reissued with a new date. However, Collectors who missed out first time were yet again disappointed that the mintage figures for even lower this time with only 84,000 of each 10p design entering circulation.
Consequently the coins are extremely rare and valuable considering their low face value. The varying designs will appeal to many - Bond fans, tea lovers or NHS workers to name a few and make an excellent gift idea.
