Horses of Santa Cruz Island No. 11
Artist: Sandra Stone
Circa: 2012
Part of the celebrated series The Horses of Santa Cruz Island, this piece captures a striking moment as two wild horses move toward the shoreline, their manes lifted by coastal wind, hooves marking the sand with silent rhythm. Inspired by the real horses that once roamed free on Santa Cruz Island—released there in the 1800s by ranching families—this series pays tribute to their enduring legacy. For over a century, they lived untamed on the island’s rugged terrain until conservation efforts in the 1990s brought their chapter to a close.
Sandra Stone, known as SandraWatercolors™, brings their memory to life through loose, expressive brushwork and natural tones. In No. 11, the horses appear focused and fluid, their motion framed by the distant profile of Anacapa Island across shimmering surf. It’s a moment of movement, memory, and connection to California’s wilder past.
