WEST NILE (West Nile Virus)
Reason to hate Mosquitoes # 31,804--WEST NILE VIRUS
It is best to avoid some families, like the Flaviviridaes. This group of miscreants includes Yellow Fever Virus, Dengue Virus, Zika Virus, and the star of this listing, WEST NILE VIRUS. First identified in Uganda in 1937, it found its way to North America by 1999. While its primary hosts are birds, it is known to infect populations of horses and other mammals, as well as reptiles. So, what do birds, horses, and other living creatures all have in common? BLOOD, which attracts mosquitoes, most commonly of the Culex pipiens variety, as far as this virus's story goes. As a hungry female mosquito feasts on the blood of one infected creature, thus becoming a carrier, it can then pass along the virus as it feasts on its next victim, and the circle grows. Most infected humans experience little to no effects, while 20% may develop mild symptoms. However, less than 1% may develop much more severe symptoms, such as Encephalitis or Meningitis, which can lead to death. Crows, Blue Jays, and other related species, are killed by infection, so dead birds in an area should be taken as a warning that WEST NILE VIRUS may have moved into the neighborhood. Don't be in deNILE. THIS Eye of Horus does NOT bring good health!
