KAGA YUZEN
Kaga Yuzen is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that originated in the Kaga region over 500 years ago. Initially characterized by plain dyeing known as "Umezome," it evolved in the mid-17th century with the introduction of pattern and picture dyeing. In 1712, a renowned fan designer, Yuzensai Miyazaki, moved from Kyoto to Kanazawa and significantly contributed to the development of Kaga Yuzen with his exceptional paste-dyeing skills.
Kaga Yuzen flourished under the patronage of the feudal lords of the Kaga district, producing many skilled dyers and designers. The technique employs five basic colors: indigo, crimson, ocher, dark green, and royal purple, and features designs that depict beautiful elements of nature, such as flowers, birds, and landscapes.
The dyeing style is distinguished by a shading technique that transitions from the outside to the inside of the patterns, often incorporating realistic motifs like plants and flowers with insect-eaten leaves. Unlike Kyo-Yuzen, which utilizes techniques such as gold leaf application, tie-dyeing, and embroidery, Kaga Yuzen focuses on its unique methods. The designs reflect the delicacy and elegance of the Japanese spirit.
