Description
Antique 19th Century Vintage West African FETISH Carved Wood & Nail NKONDI Sculpture Zaire
This dramatic one armed carved Nkondi fetish sculpture originally held a spear. He is covered with nails and has wrapped fabric medicinal bundles attached to his body. He also has a belly 'box' that would have contained charms or medicinal substances as well. It has a glass front but has been painted over so the contents cannot be seen.
Nkisi Nkondi figures are part of the Kongo artistic tradition in West Africa where the earliest documented example (by the British) was 1864. This sculpture was obtained from the estate of a collector who referenced the origin as Zaire now known as The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the date as "mid 1800s".
Dimensions are 12" height x 7" width x 5" depth and the weight is about 2 pounds 9 ounces. The condition is very good as pictured, with no cracks or breaks.
