'A New System of Domestic Cookery' was the most popular cookery book of the first half of the nineteenth century, going over sixty-seven editions, and expanding almost double in lengths from revisions in later editions.
The work was first published in 1806, and provided a short collection of recipes. It was applauded for its economic responsibility and cultural adaptability. The author also shows her opinion that housewives should have all of the mechanics needed to run a proper household, such as education and independence.
Written by Maria Eliza Rundell, who was best known for this work. Her economic responsibility shown in this work meant that she was well admired across all classes, although she intended them for the middle classes. She is sometimes considered to be the original domestic goddess. She begun collecting her recipes, household tips, and herbal remedies, to send to her daughters once they got married. She sent this same collection to a family friend, who happened o be the publisher John Murray.
