The lamp finial you select can make a fine statement and adds the final finish your lamp needs to make a unified package.  

If a lamp has balance of shade and base and relevance of finial it can change the overall look. If the lampshade is frankly short the finial can be tall to give the shade height and make it appear the lamp is coming through the shade and not just plunked on top. The lampshade most often looks best if it mirrors the shape of the lamp and the finial should also relate in color, theme or shape.  If the finial is too low and hidden by the lamp shade you can order a riser to lift the finial so it can be seen and appreciated.
