Offering a beautiful late 19th century collector plate by William Adams & Co. Pattern has the blue transfer print of the famous painting Yankee Doodle- Spirit of ’76, surrounded by a floral border. Base is stamped Imported especially for:Jessie T. Matheson Provincetown, Mass W. Adams & Co. Estd 1657 England French, Mitchell, Woodbury Co., Boston  


'The Spirit of '76 was painted by Archibald Willard about 1875. The subject is a reflection on the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence on July 4th 1776.

In 1895 The Spirit of '76 and possibly another work by Willard's involving the same subjects marching into Havana was used in American propaganda for the Spanish–American War. This was probably the prompt for the use on the painting on a souvenir plate.'

 

Measures 10 ¼” diameter

 

In Mint to near mint condition free of nicks or fleabites: a few minor surface scratches and crazing throughout commensurate with age and use
