Samuel Pierpont Langley [1834 1906] was an American astronomer, physicist, inventor of the bolometer and pioneer of aviation. With funding from the U.S Department of War, Langley spent several years designing and building manned and un-manned flying machines. On May 6, 1896, his steamed powered flying machine flew for a half a mile which was the first successful unmanned flight of a heavier-than-air flying machine. In 1867 he was appointed as the director of the Allegheny Observatory and as a professor of astronomy at the Western University of Pennsylvania and in 1887 he was appointed as the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Listed for auction is a [ALS] autograph letter signed by Samuel Pierpont Langley on the letterhead of the Allegheny Observatory, Allegheny, Pennsylvania and dated Oct 23, 1875. The letter and is addressed to a friend and completed in his hand and is nicely signed ''Very truly yours, Samuel P Langley'' in black fountain pen. The letter measures 5.00 x 7.50 inches, it has an expected mail fold and trivial toning otherwise it is in fine condition. The autograph is authentic, uncommon and the letter will be a nice addition to any aviation collection and is ideal for display.
