This book was first published in 1874 and has written of this book of forty years' travel at sea and in foreign countries. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, and at the age of fourteen, having finished all the education his father could give him in public school, was placed as an apprentice at sail-making, with John Howard and Company. And from the early days of his youth until the present time, my path for some forty years has been with those who go down to the sea in ships. He left Salem on his first voyage in the brig Amazon for Vera Cruz...."
