This is a rare, collectible and wonderful book, BAUDELAIRE: A Collection of Critacal Essays, that was published in 1962 by Prentice-Hall. Upon information and belief, this the first printing of this edition(because the book does not state it is a 1st printing, and I am not sure that it is, I have not priced it as a 1st/1st). At a minimum, it it is a very early, and rare, printing of this First Edition.
This book was part of a series entitled, Twentieth Century Views, edited by Maynard Mack of Yale University. This particular collection of essays was edited by the acclaimed Henri Peyre.
The book contains over numerous terrific essays concerning Baudelaire, his life and/or work. Among the authors included in the collection are Marcel Proust, Jean Prevost and Francois Mauriac. This is truly a must for anyone interested in Baudelaire and his work.
This particular copy is in great condition, especially considering that it is now over 50 years old. Indeed, It has no significant defects or blemishes; instead, it has some light edge and corner wear consistent with the 50+ years of normal shelf storage and handling.
The inside of the book in particular is in excellent shape with no significant flaws. The text is 100% clean with no writing or other marks. The pages are not wrinkled, ripped or creased. There are no overt stains, fingerprints or other soiling on any pages.
It is not price-clipped and there no remainder marks.
It is neither a library copy notebook club edition.
There may be some beginning page discoloration due to the normal aging process.
The cover is relatively "clean and bright", especially for its age. There are no stains, water damage, rips, significant soiling, or other marks on the cover except the previous book seller placed a price sticker on the front cover, which is removable (oh, how nice it must have been when new books cost under $2.00).
There also are what appears to be a couple of very light creases on the front cover, one on the bottom right corner and along the middle of the right edge- they in fact are not actually "hard" creases and are more accurately described as a light wrinkle.
Most of the edges of the cover are relatively sharp but there are various areas of wear, the worst of which is the edge at and around the edges of the spine.
The corners are "soft" with light wear and some beginning creasing or fraying.
The binding is relatively "tight and square."
In sum, this paperback of this terrific collection of essays is a very nice collectible book.
