This listing is for one sheet of 1.8u foil, a Tube-Wringer for corrugations, and two FREE mini plastic clothespins to hold the ribbon in place when tuning (setting tension to) the ribbon. Check my other items for single sheets of 1.8u/2.5u foil, TubeWringer for corrugating ribbons, and combinations of these items.
UPDATE! I have a video that shows an alternate method to what is described below. I will email you the link once you make a purchase. Past purchases are welcome to the video. Send me an email from your registered Paypal email address.
Aluminum Foil Details
Foil sheet is 1.8u thick. See below for individual sheet specs.
Why upgrade the ribbon to a thinner thickness ribbon? Most (not all) of the Chinese Ribbon microphones use 6u aluminum foil which isn't as responsive as 1.8u or 2.5u. Basically by lowering the mass of the ribbon you will increase the output voltage and frequency response slightly (a marginal increase, not much at all).
Specifications for 1.8u Aluminum Sheet:
Thickness: 1.8u (.00018 cm, .0018 mm, .000072 inches)
Width: 3 cm (30 mm) *
Length: 10 cm (100 mm) *
Area (squared): 73.5 cm^2 (7350 mm^2, 11.392540 inches^2)
Material: 99.1% Aluminum
The sheet might not measure EXACTLY what is listed above but should fall in the following tolerances.
* Tolerance: +/- 2 mm
Packaging:
I package the material between two pieces of acid free tracing paper. The material and tracing paper is then sandwhiched between two pieces of thick poster board. I do not accept returns BUT I will replace the matieral if it is damaged in transit. A few knicks in the material edges will not be considered damaged. This is normal for this thin of a material.
HANDLE WITH CARE. I am not responsible for the foil once you start handling it. The smallest burst of air can flip the foil over, bend it, or tear it. If you fold the material on accident you can smooth it out easily by putting it back in the tracing paper and running your fingers over the tracing paper until it is flat again.

FREE MINI Plastic Clothespins - Color Varies (The clothespins are free and not included in the cost of the kit listed here. If they break, they break.)
These are included as a courtesy. They are very inexpensive and I would lose money to ship you a replacement and you would lose money shipping the broken one to me. Just doesn't make sense.
I stumbled on these one day when I was replacing a ribbon. They are small and light so they are aren't cumbersome or get in the way, but they have enough weight to hold one end of the ribbon (or both) while you are tuning the ribbon. I like to get one end of the ribbon secure in the motor and the other end I will grab with the mini clothespin. I would then move the clothespin or tap it to get the correct tension. At one time I did use a normal clothespin at the suggestion of some of the DIY forums out there, but had trouble grabbing the ribbon, splinters (wood clothespin), I think I tore at least one ribbon because of the big clothespin every time I was trying to install a ribbon... just didn't work for me.
TIPS
Tips to help avoid wasting material. These are not fool proof.
- Use a cutting mat not a cutting board.
- Make sure to clean the mat of debris to keep your cut nice and straight.
- Use a very sharp cutting tool (exacto).
- Cut slow and steady. Avoid starting and stopping.
- I like to keep the foil between the two sheets of tracing paper when cutting it to the desired width. This will help to avoid tear out on the edges. Buy some extra tracing paper to store the foil because every time you make a cut you will also cut the tracing paper and eventually run out of the supplied tracing paper.
- Use a flat ruler as a guide and apply enough pressure so the material doesn't move on you.
- Cut the ribbon to an oversized length. I like to cut a piece the entire length (longest dimension) of the raw material to make sure I can handle and install the ribbon properly.
- Have patience. It takes some practice. Try practicing on regular foil first to see how the material responds to cutting. You can also buy some 0.6u (microns) imitation silver leaf to practice on. If you can cut this you will have NO PROBLEM cutting a thicker foil.
Tips for Corrugating Ribbons of 1.8um to 2.5um.
- Buy some tracing paper. Tracing paper is great because you can see the ribbon through the paper. You might need to double up the tracing paper. Also, tracing paper has low friction so be careful when moving it around. The ribbon can slide out.
- Cut small strips of the tracing paper and fold it in half.
- Unfold the paper and place the ribbon inside the paper at the fold and make sure it is laying straight.
- Fold the paper again so the paper is on both sides of the ribbon. One edge (length not width) of the Ribbon should be at the fold.
- Place one end of the paper into the tube wringer.
- Try to make sure that the fold in the paper is perpendicular to the gears. You want the ribbon to be as symmetrical as possible. If the ribbon is at an angle when you place it in the tube wringer you will get corrugations that are at an angle.
- Turn the handle. Done!
RETURNS ARE accepted for the tube wringer within 14 days of receiving this kit. Buyer pays for return shipping charges.
