Designed by Mint sculptor-engraver Chester Y. Martin, it commemorates the Young Astronauts Program and America's historic achievements in space flight. The three medals are individually protected within plastic capsules and housed together inside a deluxe blue velvet presentation display case alongside an official Certificate of Authenticity (COA). Each piece features a distinct composition and design.
Gold Medal: Struck in 90% modern gold, containing 0.2419 oz of pure gold, or approximately 0.25 oz total coin weight of 90% gold (This weight matches the gold content found in U.S. $5 Half Eagle pre-1933 gold coins such as the Liberty or Indian Head, and the $5 U.S. Mint Gold Commemoratives). The obverse displays a Space Shuttle soaring in flight.
Silver Medal: Struck in 90% silver, containing 0.7734 oz of pure silver (total weight up to 0.943 oz). The obverse depicts an astronaut saluting the American flag on the moon's surface.
Bronze Medal: Struck in a traditional bronze composition (90% copper / 10% zinc) weighing approximately 25 grams. The obverse displays an upward-bound Space Shuttle.
Shared Reverse: All three medals share a uniform reverse design showcasing a spread bald eagle perched gracefully atop the official Young Astronauts program emblem.
