Large Victorian parian ware game jug, Staffordshire, circa 1850–1870, attributed to Samuel Alcock & Co. The body is moulded in high relief as a tree trunk hung with the day's bag — game birds on one side and a hare suspended by its hind legs from a cord on the other — with ferns and foliage below, and the handle is formed as a glazed leaping greyhound with its front paws resting on the rim. The exterior is in the matte white bisque finish characteristic of parian porcelain, made to imitate carved marble; the interior is glazed. Parian ware was introduced in Staffordshire in the 1840s and relief-moulded sporting jugs like this "hanging game" model were among the era's most popular table wares. The base shows a faint impressed two-digit size number and a small workman's tally mark. Approximately 12 inches tall. Excellent condition. Please see all photos — they are part of the description.
