For your consideration is an incredibly scarce piece of international sporting and geopolitical history: an official commemorative medal from the 8th Asian Table Tennis Championships, held in August 1967 at the historic Singapore Badminton Hall.
This specific medal carries immense premium value as it was personally awarded to Koji Goto, who served as the Team Leader of the Japanese Delegation at the tournament. Koji Goto is globally recognized by historians as one of the fundamental architects of "Ping-Pong Diplomacy". As President of the Japan Table Tennis Association and the Table Tennis Federation of Asia, Goto famously traveled to China during the heights of the Cultural Revolution to invite the Chinese national team back to the 1971 World Championships in Nagoya. This singular sporting olive branch broke decades of Cold War isolation, directly leading to U.S. President Richard Nixon's historic 1972 visit to Beijing.
Please note: a small portion of the gold-tone finish on the bottom-left edge of the reverse side has flaked away, exposing the base metal underneath. This has been factored into the price, and detailed macro photographs of this area are provided for your review.
Design & Attributes:
• Obverse (Front): Features a striking, pristine deep green enamel center showcasing two players mid-match, bordered by vibrant red Japanese Sakura (cherry blossoms) and the rising sun flag. The outer gold-tone rim is embossed with "THE 8TH ASIAN TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS".
• Reverse (Back): Engraved in crisp, highly legible dual-language script (Japanese and English). It reads: "Team Leader of Japanese Delegation / Koji Goto / 1967 / Singapore".
Historical Context:
The 1967 tournament was an absolute triumph for the Japanese delegation under Goto's leadership, with the country famously sweeping almost every single gold medal category across the games.
Condition Report:
• Front: The enamel work is exceptionally bright, glossy, and entirely intact with no chips or visible cracking.
• Back/Edges: Displays a beautiful, undisturbed vintage brass/bronze patina with clear, crisp engravings. There is a notable area of surface flaking along the bottom-left edge on the back, underneath the word "Team" (see close-up photos). A small flake of the original gold plating/coating has come off, revealing the dark gray base metal below. The rest of the piece shows minor edge wear consistent with an authentic 50+ year old historical artifact.
• Preservation: The piece has deliberately NOT been cleaned, polished, or repaired to preserve its original numismatic integrity and historical value.
