An original St James Theatre London programme for Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room, or the vibrator play, an unusual and acclaimed period comedy inspired by the early history of electrical medical treatments in Victorian society.
This production has a particularly good British cast, starring Natalie Casey as Catherine Givings and Jason Hughes as Dr Givings, alongside Sarah Woodward, Owen Oakeshott, Flora Montgomery, Madeline Appiah and Edward Bennett.
Directed by Laurence Boswell, the production originated at the Ustinov Studio, Theatre Royal Bath in 2012 before its London run. The programme contains full cast and production information together with photographs and background material relating to the play.
The cover is especially eye-catching, with its corseted Victorian imagery and wonderfully memorable alternative title “the vibrator play” — certainly not one of those theatre programmes that disappears into a pile!
This programme comes from my late Grandma’s extensive theatre collection, gathered through many years of theatre-going. It is a fun and unusual survivor from her collection and an appealing piece of modern West End ephemera.

Condition
Good pre-owned condition overall with light signs of handling and storage. There is some minor edge and corner wear visible to the cover. Internal pages appear clean and well preserved. Please study the photographs for the exact condition.

She began her career as an air hostess during the 1940s and 1950s, travelling the world and bringing home unusual treasures from every destination. Along the way she fell in love with my grandfather, a Swissair pilot, and together they shared a lifelong passion for collecting history, art, antiques and memorabilia.
In the 1960s she opened her own antiques business, a passion she continued until retiring at the incredible age of 92. She believed every object had a story worth preserving, whether it was a theatre programme, football programme, book, magazine or antique collected during her lifetime.
Today, I'm carefully cataloguing and rehoming her collection, ensuring each piece finds someone who will appreciate it for many years to come.
