The Yaka cups of this type were used in marriage ceremonies, the bride drinking palm wine from one side and the bridegroom from the other to seal their union. Another source relates them to prestige objects connected with leadership. The kopa was formerly one of the symbols of office presented to a new chief or lineage headman upon his investiture. No one else could touch it without proper authority. At the owner’s death, a kopa was presented to his successor.
