Some information out of Wikipedia :
Saint Vincent de Paul (1581–1660) was a French Catholic priest renowned for his charity, compassion, and reform of the clergy. He founded the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) and, with Saint Louise de Marillac, the Daughters of Charity, the first active community of women devoted entirely to serving the poor.
He was born in Pouy in Gascony and ordained in 1600. Early in life he experienced hardship, including a period of captivity by Barbary pirates, before returning to France and dedicating himself to the poor.
In Paris, he organized Confraternities of Charity, founded hospitals, cared for foundlings, and served as chaplain to galley slaves. His work profoundly shaped Catholic social action, and he became a central figure in the revival of French Catholicism.
He died in 1660, was canonized in 1737, and is honored as the patron saint of charitable societies.
