Saint Bonaventure (c. 1217–1274) was an Italian Franciscan theologian, mystic, and one of the major thinkers of the Middle Ages. He was born Giovanni di Fidanza in Bagnoregio, experienced a childhood healing attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, and later joined the Franciscan Order.
As a scholar at the University of Paris, he became a leading teacher of theology and wrote influential works such as Journey of the Mind to God and a new official Life of Saint Francis.
He was elected Minister General of the Franciscans in 1257, where he unified the order and shaped its spiritual and administrative identity. Later, Pope Gregory X appointed him Cardinal of Albano, and he played a key role at the Second Council of Lyon.
He was canonized in 1482 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1588, remembered as the “Seraphic Doctor” for his blend of scholastic theology and mystical insight.
