The Fiction Collective (now known as Fiction Collective Two, or FC2) is an author-run, not-for-profit publishing cooperative dedicated to avant-garde, experimental, and non-traditional fiction. Founded in 1974 by a group of writers seeking an alternative to the commercial constraints of mainstream New York publishing, it stands as one of the longest-running artist-led literary presses in the United States. 

The collective began when authors Jonathan Baumbach, Peter Spielberg, Mark Mirsky, Ronald Sukenick, and Steve Katz began meeting in Baumbach’s Brooklyn apartment. Frustrated by a commercial market that rejected structurally challenging work, they established a democratic, cooperative protocol.

Peer Voting: Books were accepted for publication by a simple majority vote of the author-members.Mutual Editing: Selected authors edited each other's manuscripts.

Perpetual Print: The collective committed to keeping its published titles in print indefinitely.The Inaugural TitlesWhen the collective launched its first cycle of books, it put forward three foundational novels edited in a round-robin style.

When Reruns was published in 1974 alongside the Fiction Collective's other inaugural titles, it managed to secure highly coveted coverage in several prominent contemporary publications. Because the book was a self-consciously experimental anti-novel, reviewers were deeply fascinated by its rebellion against standard narrative rules.

Jonathan Baumbach’s Reruns is the hilarious nightmare of a morose middle-aged filmmaker condemned to reimagine his past in the hope of one day escaping it. This perpetually abashed and variously-named narrator screens his terrors during thirty-three nights of Oedipal farce and unrelieved performance anxiety.

His failures are legion: potency, imagination, combat, marriage, memory, fathering, even bladder control. Everywhere patriarchs loom, mincing mothers abandon their helpless sons, and lascivious schoolteachers praise little Honcho’s good manners while unbuckling his pants.

Part inverted bildungsroman, part farce of arrested development, this inaugural release by the Fiction Collective retains its power of hallucinatory exorbitance and lugubrious charm into its fourth decade.
