Opening its doors in 1870, the Grand Hôtel du Cap became one of the defining destinations of the French Riviera. Over the decades, its guests included writers, artists, and European society, and F. Scott Fitzgerald drew upon the hotel in Tender Is the Night. In 1987, the Grand Hôtel du Cap was renamed Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc.

Originally affixed to steamer trunks and suitcases, luggage labels were subtle markers of status—signaling where one had traveled and, more importantly, where one had stayed. Today, they remain highly collectible artifacts of early travel.
