Sterling Silver Hen Letter Opener Sampson Mordan Chester 1919

Item Details

A sterling silver letter opener made by Sampson Mordan & Co and assayed at Chester in 1919. The handle is formed as a standing hen, finely modelled with engraved featherwork, comb, tail feathers and legs. The long tapering blade has a simple form that contrasts with the detailed figural terminal. Animal-themed silver novelties by Sampson Mordan are highly regarded and this example combines practical use with decorative appeal.

It is in good condition for its age, with visible signs of age and use. Surface marks, scratches and light wear are present throughout. The blade remains straight with no obvious damage, and the hallmarks are clear and readable. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
