A sterling silver letter opener made by Sampson Mordan & Co and assayed at Chester in 1919. The handle is formed as a standing hen, finely modelled with engraved featherwork, comb, tail feathers and legs. The long tapering blade has a simple form that contrasts with the detailed figural terminal.
