A novelty sterling silver desk seal by Sampson Mordan & Co, assayed in London in 1920. The handle is modelled as an owl with detailed feather decoration and prominent facial features, mounted above a circular seal matrix engraved with the initials "J.G.D.". Animal-form seals were a popular speciality of Sampson Mordan, whose novelty silver items remain highly sought after by collectors today. The compact size and quality of casting make this an attractive example of the firm's post-Edwardian production. It is in good condition for its age with minor dings, scratches and general surface wear consistent with use. The hallmarks remain present, and the seal would benefit from a gentle clean if desired.
