There has been a Brannams Pottery in Barnstaple North Devon since 1848. Founded by Thomas Brannam his son Charles took over in 1867 and his sons Charles and John later. The grandsons formed a limited company in 1914. According to the impressed mark on the base of this little bowl, it dates from that time.
This is a great, collectable piece of english vernacular art pottery. It would be a good addition to any collection. It is typical of the Brannam output, utilitarian and well made in earthenware with a high lustre green-yellow glaze inside. The glaze is brighter than the photos show.
Considering its age, it is in remarkable condition, no damage other than a small hairline which is pretty hard to spot with the naked eye (photo 2) and some of the usual crazing that high lustre items acquire.
10cm at the rim, 5cm tall, 4cm base.
