Our client's fine antique 19th century Meiji period Kutani porcelain figure of a ceremonial elephant measures 16 by 15 by 6 inches and weighs 16 lbs.
It features various decorations including caparison a Xiangyu (or Xiangjiao) carriage on top where a small child sits holding a bowl, gazing down on another child seated on the head of the elephant. Apparently unsigned.
Apparent restorations to the structure on top. Surface dirt particularly in crevices. Firing cracks/hairlines visible on the legs, trunk and carriage.
