An evocative original Phoenix Theatre programme for Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, starring the legendary Paul Muni as Willy Loman in a production directed by Elia Kazan.

This is a particularly interesting piece of theatre history, bringing together three enormously important names: Arthur Miller, whose Death of a Salesman became one of the defining American plays of the 20th century; acclaimed stage and screen actor Paul Muni; and celebrated director Elia Kazan.

The cast also includes Katharine Alexander as Linda, Kevin McCarthy as Biff, Frank Maxwell as Happy, Bessie Love, Ralph Theodore, Henry Oscar, George Margo, Ronald Frazer and others.

The production was staged at London's Phoenix Theatre, Charing Cross Road, with setting and lighting by Jo Mielziner, music composed by Alex North, and costumes by Julia Sze.

The striking period cover, depicting the travelling salesman with his cases, makes this a particularly atmospheric survivor from the production and an excellent display piece for a collection devoted to Arthur Miller, classic theatre or mid-century stage history.

This programme came from my late grandmother's extensive collection of theatre programmes and paper ephemera, gathered through many years of theatre-going. It is exactly the sort of piece I love finding within the collection – not simply an old programme, but a surviving record of a major play performed by some of the most important theatrical figures of their generation.

Condition:
A well-used original vintage programme showing considerable age and handling wear. There is a pronounced vertical centre crease/fold running through the programme, with associated rubbing and small areas of surface wear to the cover. Further creasing, edge/corner wear, marks and general signs of age are present. The internal pages remain legible and the original staples are present. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
