Japanese Natural Whetstone Okunomon Suita / Hideriyama Renge Suita Set 657g

Description

A rare San-gata sized set featuring an Okunomon Suita and a Hideriyama Renge Suita from Kyoto, Japan.

Both stones are ideally sized for use as Tomo Nagura (companion nagura) with natural finishing stones, while also serving as practical finishing stones for smaller kitchen knives, planes, chisels, and other edged tools.

The Okunomon Suita is a highly sought-after natural finishing stone that has become increasingly difficult to find in recent years. It features a fine, homogeneous structure combined with excellent cutting performance. With its medium hardness and smooth sharpening feel, it produces a rich, creamy slurry consistently, allowing it to create refined kasumi finishes and exceptionally keen, well-polished edges. The line visible across the center of the sharpening surface is a "Kesuji" (hairline) rather than a toxic line (suji), and it is not known to cause significant scratching during sharpening.

In contrast, the Hideriyama Renge Suita is admired for its beautiful renge (lotus) patterns spread across the stone's surface. It quickly produces a rich, soft slurry, offering a smooth, silky sharpening feel with excellent control. It creates a deep, attractive kasumi finish on soft iron (jigane) while refining hardened steel into a keen edge with outstanding edge retention.

Combining the smooth, stable sharpening characteristics of the rare Okunomon Suita with the elegant sharpening feel and beautiful renge patterns of the Hideriyama Renge Suita, this set offers exceptional practicality as well as strong collectible appeal. It is an excellent choice for enthusiasts who appreciate premium Japanese natural finishing stones.
