Rare Early Hungarian CDV Photograph – Molnár & Brodszky, Győr – c.1862–1870

Molnár & Brodszky, Győr, c.1862–1870. Albumen CDV photographic reproduction of a 19th-century Romantic landscape, probably depicting the ruins of Beckov (Beczkó) Castle, then in the Kingdom of Hungary, today Slovakia. The original artwork may be connected with Sándor Brodszky's documented treatment of Beckov Castle, although the exact source painting has not yet been conclusively identified.

An unusual and highly attractive 19th-century carte-de-visite photograph from the celebrated studio of József Molnár (1821–1899) and Sándor Brodszky (1819–1901) in Győr, Kingdom of Hungary.

Both Molnár and Brodszky were academically trained painters and important figures in 19th-century Hungarian art. They established a photographic studio in Győr in the 1860s.

The reverse bears their elaborate period studio mark:

“Molnár és Brodszky – akad. festészek fényirdája – az evang. Convent udvarában – Győrött.”

The image depicts a picturesque Romantic landscape dominated by the ruins of a medieval castle on a rocky wooded hill. Horses, villagers, rustic fencing, houses and a dog appear in the foreground.

The highly composed and painterly character of the scene strongly suggests that this is an early photographic reproduction of a painting or graphic work, rather than a conventional outdoor photograph.

Research has established that Sándor Brodszky painted numerous Romantic castle landscapes, including a documented work entitled “Beczkó vára / Schloss Beczko” (Beckov Castle). The architecture and landscape shown here appear compatible with historical representations of Beckov Castle, today in Slovakia and formerly part of the Kingdom of Hungary.

The exact work represented has not been conclusively identified, however, and the possible Beckov/Brodszky connection is offered as an attribution for further research rather than as a definitive identification.

A particularly interesting example of early Hungarian photography combining photography, painting, topography and Romantic landscape art.
