This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a colorful Hoploscaphites sp. from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs and many distinct large nodes. The keel is quite flat, with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This striking ammonite is beautifully preserved and exhibits fine detail. The distinct cephalopod is extremely inflated and 3-D, and the reddish-brown iridescent nacre is very well displayed. The aesthetic ammonite is wonderfully showcased on a large, sculpted block of concretionary matrix that also includes a beautiful irridescent ammonite impression. This is a very collectible and extremely displayable Hoploscaphites from the Black Hills of South Dakota, USA.
