SASS EMPORIA are delighted to offer this striking ceramic elephant figurine produced by the Cortendorf Ceramics of West Germany in the late 1960's. Founded in 1890 by Julius Griesbach in the town of Cortendorf in Bavaria's district of Coburg, the firm initially produced household stoneware products and luxury tableware and porcelain figurines. During the 1950's and 1960's Cortendorf earned international acclaim for their vibrant figurative ceramics. In 1973 Cortendorf was acquired by the German giant Goebel Porzellanfabrik also renown for their fine porcelain animal figurines.
Here we present a large ceramic stylised elephant figure in a trumpeting pose that's decorated in a lustrous cherry red glaze with charcoal coloured accents that pronounce its eyes, trunk and folds of its large flapping ears. Sculptured to depict its gentle strength and playfulness this elephant exudes its confident charm. In remarkable collectors condition free from chips, cracks or crazing, that these figurines are so often susceptible to damage, this elephant is ready to be your collectors showpiece and an exceptional example of the mid-century porcelain finery that Bavaria is famous for!
