Designed by Sori Yanagi, a designer who laid the foundation for Japanese industrial design, this iconic piece of furniture was unveiled in 1956.
This beautiful stool was born from the fusion of Mr. Yanagi's imagination and Tendo Mokko's craftsmanship.
It is a masterpiece of design history, and is included in the collections of museums around the world, such as the Louvre Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
A simple structure made by joining two identical molded plywood pieces with brass fittings. Despite its distinctive form, it can be adapted to a variety of interior styles.
Furthermore, because the two molded plywood pieces support each other, they are sometimes chosen as wedding gifts.

Sori Yanagi
Born in Tokyo in 1915, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) and joined the Junzo Sakakura Architectural Institute in 1942. In 1950, he established the Yanagi Industrial Design Institute Foundation. He then designed the prototype for the Butterfly Stool, and after several years of research and development, it was presented at the Yanagi Industrial Design Institute Exhibition held at Matsuya Ginza in 1956. In 1958, the Butterfly Stool was selected for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1977, he became the director of the Japan Folk Crafts Museum, which was founded by his father, Soetsu Yanagi. In 2002, he received the Order of Cultural Merit.
