Sasajima Kihei (1906-1993) was a renowned Japanese artist from Tochigi Prefecture, celebrated for his innovative woodblock prints and traditional Japanese themes. A student of Aoyama Shihan School (now Tokyo Gakugei University), he studied under Uchiura Un'ichi and Shiko Munakata, becoming Munakata's first disciple. Initially influenced by expressionism, Sasajima's style evolved into a rigorous, classical realism rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics, emphasizing simplicity, strength, and authenticity.
He pioneered the unique technique of Takuzuri woodblock printing, expanding the boundaries of printmaking. His works often depict iconic Japanese symbols such as Fudo Myo-o (Acala), historic cityscapes, Mount Fuji, and goddess statues, reflecting Japan's cultural and spiritual heritage. Sasajima's art is characterized by a straightforward, powerful realism reminiscent of Sesson and Kamakura Buddhist sculptures.
