This is the Commonwealth Of Australia's SENATE Weekly Hansard No. 5, 1974, Twenty-Eighth Parliament Second Session - First Period 8, 9, 10 April. The following day on April 11 the 28th Parliament was dissolved after only 18 months as a result of the controversy over the appointment of the DLP Senator Vince Gair as ambassador to Ireland and LABOR'S inability to pass Bills through a Senate they did not control. The subsequent announcement by the Federal Opposition Leader Bill Sneddon, that opposition parties would block the governments supply bills in the Senate caused the LABOR Prime Minister Gough Whitlam to respond by calling a double dissolution election for May 18th 1974 - which LABOR subsequently won but still failed to gain control in the Senate.
