Rare authentic V2 “Vergeltungswaffe 2” was the first long range, guided ballistic missile and the first human made object to reach the edge of space. Developed in Nazi Germany under Wernher Von Braun’s team at Peenemunde, it stood about 14 m (46 feet) tall, ran on liquid oxygen and ethanol, and could hit targets roughly 320 km or 200 miles away at supersonic speed – – so fast that victims typically heard the explosion before they heard the rocket.

In combat late 1944–1945, V – 2S were fired mainly at cities like London and Antwerp. Unlike earlier weapons, it offered essentially no practical defense at the time. It rose high, fell steeply and arrived with a little warning, tens of thousands of people were killed – – tragically, many more people died producing V – 2s then were killed by their impacts, because mass production relied heavily on forced, labor, and brutal underground facilities.

After the war, captured V – 2S and engineers reshape the next era – the United States and the Soviet Union both used the design as a spring board for missiles and space programs. And the U.S., V – 2 test launches helped Pioneer high – altitude research, and indirectly influenced early rockets that led towards the space race. The V – 2’S legacy is a stark mix of breakthroughs in propulsion and guidance – – and a reminder of the human cost behind the first step “towards space”.
