Antique German Papier-Mâché Snuff Box – Attributed to the Stobwasser Workshop

An attractive antique German papier-mâché snuff box dating from the 19th century and attributed to the Stobwasser workshop tradition of Braunschweig (Brunswick).

The lid is beautifully decorated with a finely hand-painted humorous genre scene, retaining its original printed German title:

"Heraus muss er! Der Nagel!"

("The nail has to come out!")

The amusing domestic scene is characteristic of the witty painted subjects that made German papier-mâché boxes highly sought after during the 19th century.
